Susan realized that she was humorous during the period that she was employed and serving as a freedom of information and data protection specialist. She began by being a stand-up comedian doing it during the evenings and finally left her job to pursue comedy as part of her career. Calman was even awarded an honorary degree for her work as a broadcaster, and comedian, and for campaigning for LGBT rights which are also associated with mental health.

The honorary degree was achieved from the University of Glasgow. In 2005, she made it to the semi-finals of the BBC New Comedy Awards and in 2006 she reached the finals of the Funny Women competition. She portrayed Nadine in the Fresh Meat comedy-drama series from 2011 to 2013 and won the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards in 2013 for “Best Radio Comedy”.
