Angela Rayner Member of Parliament (MP)
In September 2014, Angela was selected to become Labour’s candidate for the seat of Ashton-under-Lyne, after the retirement of David Heyes. She won the seat at the 2015 general election, increasing both the Labour majority and its share of the vote in the constituency.
Angela delivered her maiden speech in the House of Commons on June 3, 2015. She nominated Andy Burnham in the 2015 Labour leadership election, but the following year became one of just 18 Members of Parliament to back the incumbent Jeremy Corbyn against challenger Owen Smith in the 2016 leadership election.
On July 1, 2016, after a series of resignations from the Shadow Cabinet, Corbyn appointed Rayner to the position of Shadow Secretary of State for Education. She wrote that decreasing teachers’ salaries would lead to shortages in those joining the profession.
She championed the policy of a National Education Service, which would be modeled along similar lines to the UK National Health Service, as well as promoting an increase in funding to early years education. For her role as Shadow Education Secretary, she was considered by some as a possible future Labour Leader.
In the 2019 general election, Angela successfully defended her Ashton-under-Lyne seat, being returned as Member of Parliament for the third time in 5 years.
She opted to not run for the Labour leadership in the 2020 leadership election, choosing to support her flat-mate Rebecca Long-Bailey, who came second to Keir Starmer, and instead successfully stood for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party on April 4, 2020, replacing Tom Watson. She was appointed Shadow First Secretary of State and Chair of the Labour Party the following day.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces Angela Rayner in the House of Commons
Boris Johnson will face Angela Rayner at Prime Minister’s Questions this afternoon. The deputy Labour leader will have her chance to grill the prime minister during the weekly questions session in the House of Commons. The MP for Ashton-under-Lyne is standing in for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who has been awaiting a coronavirus test result after a family member displayed symptoms.
Mr. Johnson is likely to be questioned on the coronavirus test and trace system after the government announced coronavirus tests would now need to be rationed. As the system struggles to cope with soaring demand, people have been turning up to accidents and emergencies to ask for Covid-19 tests.
On Tuesday, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust said it was managing a “high volume” of patients who had turned up to A&E requesting tests after struggling to secure them online or at mobile units. Today’s PMQ’s comes one week after Mr. Johnson announced his “Operation Moonshot” plan for mass coronavirus testing of millions of people.
Angela Rayner accuses Boris Johnson of ‘incompetence’ at PMQs
She said the PM was focused on restoring grouse shooting, rather than fixing the testing system. He replied he faced “the most difficult dilemmas of any modern government” and accused Labour of “carping”.
The deputy Labour leader was standing in for Sir Keir Starmer. The Labour leader had been isolated after his child had coronavirus symptoms, and ahead of PMQs, the Labour leader tweeted that the child’s test result had come back negative.
