During the UDA nominations, the people of Kericho county failed to vote in the former cabinet Secretary devolution, Charles Keter, and have cautioned Aaron to do the same to him if he fails to be serious.
Aaron Cheruiyot Senator
Cheruiyot announced his intent to contest for the Kericho senatorial seat on November 24, 2015, and was advised by his friends and family. He felled selected politicians including former Ministers Franklin Bett and Magerer Langat. The senator has a strong vision for Kericho county to see to the development of the region.
Cheruiyot who was a member of the Jubilee Party is the new Kericho Senator-elect. Aaron Cheruiyot emerged winner after garnering 109,358 votes beating his closest challenger Paul Sang of Kanu who garnered 56,307 votes. The win demonstrates Jubilee’s grip in the vote-rich region while at the same time re-affirming Deputy President William Ruto’s influence in the South Rift region amid Kanu’s apparent renaissance.
The contest, which had been described by many as a show of might between the former ruling party, Kanu, and an enlivened Jubilee Party had been tipped as a key point for DP Ruto whose hold in the region had been under constant threat from the emerging rebellion led by Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter.
Despite the eventual uncertainty that gripped the polls over who will carry the day, Cheruiyot managed to floor Sang in a race that attracted six candidates with 58 percent of the registered voters turning up to vote.
Cheruiyot, 31, took the lead from the start of the vote-counting process and maintained his hold to the last vote.Other candidates in the race included Daniel Tonui (NVP) who got 772, MDP’s Wycliffe Kipkemoi Ngenoh (497), UDM’s Paul Kipyegon Sigei (473), and David Kipkoech Mutai of ND who garnered 427.
The senatorial seat was left vacant after Charles Keter was appointed into Cabinet by President Uhuru Kenyatta to take charge of the Energy Ministry which was left vacant after the dismissal of Davis Chirchir over corruption allegations. The contest came barely a month after Governor Ruto-backed Andrew Maritim of the People’s Patriotic Party of Kenya beat Jubilee’s Richard Leitich to win the Nyongores Ward by-election.
Maritim garnered 4,988 votes with Leitich coming in second with 3,029. In his campaign rallies, however, DP Ruto had expressed optimism in retaking the Kericho senatorial seat despite Kanu’s resurgence. The deputy president stated that Kanu had nothing to offer noting that they did not do anything for the locals during the 24 years the party was in power.
Kanu’s Gideon Moi, however, sought to demystify the pessimism associated with the party by stating that they were the new and only way out for the region. The campaigns were also marred by allegations of ‘outside’ interference with now President William Ruto claiming that Kanu candidate Paul Sang was a project of CORD leader Raila Odinga, claims that the party vehemently refuted.
The youthful Senator-elect saw off competition from seasoned politicians including former National Housing Corporation chair Sammy Chepkwony, former Roads Minister Franklin Bett, and former ODM Executive Director Magerer Lagat to win the Jubilee Party nomination in January this year.
Aaron Cheruiyot Political Career
Businessman Aaron Cheruiyot, 31, upstaged seasoned politicians to clinch the Jubilee Party (JP) ticket for the March 7 senatorial by-election.
Mr. Cheruiyot, who conducted his campaign under the slogan “Young man for the Job” beat former Roads Minister Franklin Bett, former Kipkelion MP and one-time ODM Executive Director Magerer Lang’at and former National Housing Corporation chairman Sammy Chepkwony to win the ticket.
Also in the race were former Chemelil Sugar company manager Joel Kirui and Festus Moutor, who was the political advisor to Governor Paul Chepkwony. Cheruiyot, a mass communication graduate from Moi University garnered 17,565 votes across the six constituencies to beat his closest challenger Mr. Bett, who got 16,914 votes.
The much-anticipated announcement was made at 3 am, yesterday at the county’s polling station, Kericho Teachers Training College (TTC), by the JP’s elections board chairman Aden Noor Ali, who also served as the returning officer for the Kericho primaries.
He was accompanied by the party’s Secretary-General Veronica Maina and executive director Nixon Korir, among other top officials. Mr. Lang’at came third with 14,059 while Mr. Chepkwony, who garnered 12,528, came fourth. Joel Kirui (2,152) and Moutor (1,312) came fifth and sixth respectively.
Immediately the announcement was made, Cheruiyot, who was pensively sitting between his rivals, Lang’at and Bett, rose to his feet in victory, as his supporters, mainly the youth, sang in jubilation.
He will now face off with Kanu’s candidate, former Bureti MP Paul Sang as well as New Vision Party’s candidate, former Kipkelion MP Bishop Tanui in the by-election.
At hand to congratulate Cheruiyot was Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu, who was also elected in a by-election.
“As the first Jubilee elected leader, I had to be in Kericho to ensure we win. We had resolved that we would respect and embrace the candidate who the voters would back in the nomination. I am confident that Cheruiyot will win the by-election by a landslide,” said Mr. Waititu.
Speaking after receiving his nomination certificate, an elated Cheruiyot described it a great honor to be the likely heir to Charles Keter, who was appointed Energy and Petroleum Cabinet secretary.
“When the seat fell vacant, I contacted a few of my friends and I told them that I was going to give it a try. I am extremely happy and honored that I am the candidate that the residents have picked to take over the baton from Mr. Keter,” said Cheruiyot.
He attributed the win to the vigorous campaign launched by his team comprising young people who believed in his vision of turning the county’s fortunes around and taking it to greater heights.
“I would also like to thank the Jubilee leaders for restraining themselves from interfering with the campaign, and allowing the county to conduct a free and fair nomination process,” he added. His rivals, Bett, Magerer, and Chepkwony conceded defeat and pledged to support him throughout his race to the Senate.
“The party conducted the free and fair nomination and today, the project that has succeeded is the people’s project. I pledge to support him and ensure Jubilee retains the seat,” said Magerer.
Bett half-jokingly said if he had one more campaign day, he would have defeated Cheruiyot. On his part, Mr. Chepkwony told residents not to allow politics to divide them but they should focus on development after the by-election.
