Career
Abby kicked off her performance career in 1986 as the bassist for the Los Angeles band The Lovedolls, inspired by the cult films Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and Lovedolls Superstar directed by Dave Markey. They released the album Love One Another in 1989. In the same year, Travis joined the power pop trio The Rails.
Since the early 1990s, Travis has been a touring and studio bass player, often lending her backup vocals. One of her initial gigs was with Spinal Tap on the Break Like the Wind Tour in 1992, where she danced as Promethia Pendragon during “Stonehenge” and played lead bass on “Big Bottom” in Phoenix, AZ. In 1993, she toured France with Vanessa Paradis on her Natural High tour.
The Bangles
In 2005, Abby became the bass player for the re-formed Bangles, taking over from Michael Steele who left for “artistic reasons.” The Bangles collaborated with Travis on her song “Lies” (credited as Abby Travis and The Bangles), released in January 2008 to support New Orleans displaced musicians. However, later that year, Travis left The Bangles for reasons not disclosed.
The Go-Go’s
In 2012, Abby stepped in for Kathy Valentine on bass for the remaining tour dates of the Go-Go’s due to Kathy’s wrist injury, as announced on the band’s website. Although Kathy was initially expected to rejoin after recovering, on March 8, 2013, The Go-Go’s announced she wouldn’t be returning. Abby continued to play bass until Kathy Valentine returned in February 2018.
Sumo Princess
In 2018, Abby revealed the creation of Sumo Princess, a collaboration with drummer Gene Trautmann (known for Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age). Together, they’ve released two 7-inch singles and toured alongside Go-Go Jane Wiedlin’s side project Elettrodomestico.
Final Thoughts
Abby is truly an inspiration for aspiring musicians. She demonstrates what can be achieved with determination and a refusal to give up. Her journey serves as a motivating example for those pursuing their musical aspirations.
