Adam opened Upstate Shredding at the Tioga County Industrial Park in Owego, NY in 1997. In the late 1990s, the company was in danger of bankruptcy after business investments were made during a lagging metal industry.
Adam, in 2004, served eight months at Otisville Federal Prison in New York, then another two and a half months in a halfway house for kiting checks during the company’s financial struggles that started in 1998.
Later in 2005, he acquired Upstate Shredding’s sister company, Ben Weitsman & Son, Inc., after his father retired, and later in December 2009, he acquired an 11-acre scrapyard in Solvay, NY from Peter Matlow for $225,000.
