Adele Lost 50 Pounds but the internet just Can’t seem to Get Over It!
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins better known by her stage name Adele is a well established English singer and songwriter. Lately, people have been judging her by her recent loss of weight instead of judging her by her talent. While thousands of people celebrated her appearance in a rare photo she posted for her 32nd birthday, others had a different tune. “Don’t talk about Adele’s weight loss” was the overarching theme of the internet on Wednesday.
The Eglish singer has not spoken publicly about her weight loss, so we cannot speculate as to why or how she now appears to be smaller. And it goes without saying that a smaller body does not make someone healthier or happier in many cases, weight loss is a symptom of health problems and can be a sign of eating disorders.
Adele isn’t new to this: her weight was also discussed admiringly, critically, endlessly before she lost it. In the modern musical landscape, where female artists specifically are viciously pressured to be perma-slim, the message seemed to be that she was one of those rare talents who were “allowed” to be bigger. At other times, the focus on her weight verged on patronizing and reductive, as though her BMI-based “relatability” was the main draw and her talent a poor second.
Is this why she decided to lose weight or was it for health, love, personal reinvention? “Come on, Adele,” the world seems to be saying. “Never mind your stellar achievements. Stand in a pair of outsized leggings stretching them out to demonstrate how wonderfully skinny you got. Tell us your weight loss story.”
For some, weight truly is the torture that never ends. On Planet Woman, even today, weight loss is still mainly cast as the life-giving sun, while weight gain is the foreboding death star that will kill your dreams. For some, it gets properly serious. The plus-size people who are made to feel grotesque on a daily basis. The anorexics whose deadly mental health condition is undermined and underfunded.
The questions and the rage around weight, diets, and body image never stop. Why is a thin woman preferable to a fat one? Why is smaller better than bigger? Then you get Adele, a celebrity who decided to lose a shedload of weight, and there’s another pressing feminist question: whose business is it really?
It’s depressing that one of the most celebrated singers of her generation has been reduced so easily and vehemently to a fat/thin binary. It’s not that there’s been a reaction to Adele’s weight loss; rather, that she has come to embody every possible over-reaction. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of gossip but, casting around, neutrality to her new body is tellingly scarce. Instead, it’s Adele is a “thinspiration”.
No, Adele is too thin! She’s let down other women! She’s cheated with surgery! She’ll be fat again soon! Some of these people won’t even realize why her size matters so much to them, just that it really does. Somehow, just by deciding to lose weight, Adele has been forced to take on the burden of all the fatphobia in the world.
She’s glowing for a look like tanned Mrs. Corden
Adele has been close to the actor and chats show host James Corden since before she was famous. Now relocated to LA like the singer, Corden and his wife Julia are a part of her inner circle. Julia, a former charity executive, is the veteran of dozens of red carpet events with James and has developed a distinctly Californian glow — fake tan being every blonde’s best friend.
Adele’s deep bronze may be the work of celebrity favourite Kristyn Pradas who offers full-body contouring. Ms Pradas says: ‘This doesn’t mean every muscle looks chiselled. It’s just about accentuating someone’s favourite features and camouflaging their less favourite.’
Another reason for Adele’s glow may be intravenous vitamin boosts. She has been named as a client of the Drip Doctors in LA. Their Limitless drip contains antioxidants and vitamins C and B. Plus, they do house calls for the privacy-conscious.
