Ken Erics Interview
Q: A pleasant morning to you Sir. It’s my pleasure meeting you.
Ken Erics: Good morning to you, it’s my pleasure too.
Q1: Sir I learned you just bagged an award as the ”Best Actor of the year” in the just concluded Nollywood Ambassadors Award held in Sheraton Hotels, Abuja on the 29th of September,2017, How do you feel bagging such prestigious award amidst many talents in the industry?
Ken Erics: Thank you so much,I actually feel elated and excited being recognized and honored for handwork, it means a lot to me and I appreciate that deeply, to that I say a big thank you to the organizers of Nollywood Ambassadors Award for this and to my fans who have remained steadfast with me;who have supported, encouraged, and loved me from day1, I must say you all made me who I am today and I feel humbled in all of it.I am very grateful.
Q2: Having featured in many bestselling movies, which would you say is your favorite of all?
Ken Erics: Do I really have a favourite of all? No, I don’t think I have a favorite movie though I have a few I hold close to my heart; Few movies that actually challenged me and had since pushed me so much.
Films like Crossed path, Okafor’s Law, Burning Bridges, Body Language and You are my Light and some others; In all, I love all my movies because I give in the same amount of energy.
Q3: Many of your fans see you as a very emotional and sensational Actor, So I would love to ask” Who is your inspiration? Like who or what inspires your creativity?
Ken Erics: First of all my inspiration comes from God Almighty who gave me the talent;Secondly, In my early days, There are some actors I looked up to,I love watching their movies, Actors like Olu Jacobs, Pete Edochie, RMD, Ramsey Noah Jnr, Sam Dede and lot more others. Then the actors were very seasoned and watching them inspired my love for the art which led to my opting for Theatre and Film Studies at the University and here I am. Although when I was a child I had always been drawn to the art.
Q: Pardon my curiosity, I would love we get more personal if you don’t mind.
Ken Erics: It’s alright.
Q4: What do you spend more on as a celebrity-Is it on charity, Perfumes, Clothing or ??
Ken Erics: (cuts in)Truthfully, I am not the kind of Actor that values materialism a lot. I am not extravagant; I prefer spending more on Humanity to material things.
Q5: What do you do when not working?
Ken Erics: When I am not working, I am resting although that’s exactly opposite of it because my work takes alot-So when am not at work, I am either on vacation somewhere tranquil swimming, going to the beaches, engaging in some other sporting activities. Generally, I engage in activities that appeal to me aside being an Actor
Q6: Right now you are arguably the most-sought-after Actor. How has fame affected your formal self-Is the Ken of today same as Ken of yesteryears?
Ken Erics: There is basically no much difference, except that I am now restricted to some extent in the sense that I can barely go to some places I am used to going and doing some things like I used to. In all, I try as much as possible to remain Me.I don’t want to go with the winds and get caught up with the fantasy of some imaginary personality.
Q7: Good to know. As an actor what languages are you fluent in?
Ken Erics: English, as an Igbo son I speak Igbo and having spent most of my childhood days in Kano I speak Hausa fluently.
Q8: What is the weirdest thing a fan has ever done to you?
Ken Erics: A fan actually kissed me in the Church.
Q9: Ohk, that’s actually weird, What is your weirdest fear?
Ken Erics: Fear!Fear!! Fear is something that really doesn’t resonate with me, I don’t know why! But my greatest fear is God Almighty, He is the only one I fear. Every other thing I believe happens at his will. Know this, If you are the type that entertains fear, you are by default making yourself vulnerable.
Q10: In OMUGWO, you played the role of an On-Air Personality. Did you see the role challenging compared to what you do before the camera??
Ken Erics: Yea, It was challenging because here I am an Actor going to act as an OAP. Though, I have been in a radio house as a guest and not as a show Anchor. It was a big challenge but because of the type of person I worked with[KUNLE AFOLAYAN], who is an actors director, Kunle puts you through to ensure you come up with your best. In the end, I pulled it.
Q11: Are you currently working on any project?
Ken Erics: I recently wrapped up a project with Royal Arts Academy titled” Body Language” which is set for the cinemas this month[October] starring Myself, Ramsey Noah Jnr and other talents. I am starting another one soon with a producer[CHINNY], starring myself, Desmond Elliot, Alex Ekubo and Omar Nnadi.
Q12: Earlier in the interview, you mentioned Ramsey Noah as one of your role models, How did you feel working on the same set with him being someone you have always looked up to?
Ken Erics: I felt very happy and fulfilled; You know how it feels working with someone who actually mentored you; It was a great and learning experience for me. I saw the other side of him; Never knew he is a very good Director too. He helped me put in more into my craft.
Q13: Let’s take a brief look into the industry[Nollywood].It seems it is getting highly competitive with the rise of many talents, In that regard,I beg to ask, where do you see yourself in the competition and in 25 years from now?
Ken Erics: [Smiles]oh. I don’t really see myself competing with anybody. As a matter of fact, I have never competed with anyone,I am always on my lane. And in 25 years,I basically see myself soaring higher. Probably,I may not be doing as many films as I do now but I must have built a reputable legacy;I would have built a standard for my brand, Most importantly,I hope to be a huge inspiration to a whole lot of people especially the younger generation.
Q14: Who is your celebrity crush?
Ken Erics: Oh[smiles],That is a tough one because I actually crush on a whole lot of people. One thing about me is that”Talent turns me on”.Once you are talented,I am your crush already.Though I crush on a lot of people,Genevieve Nnaji is someone I have always crushed on because of her works, pedigree and the standard she has maintained.
Q15: As a star actor, how would one get your attention as a realist?
Ken Erics: Well Getting across to me is easy ,afterall we are in a world of social media today. If you are stranger you can always reach me if you have something to say.I get connected with my fans mostly on social media platforms..
Q16: [Cuts in],In otherwords you think you are really accessible to those that comes in contact with you?
Ken Erics: Yes I am,I believe I am although I may not be accessible to everybody because there are thousands of people out there. You may not even know there are messages you havent responded to but I try as much as possible to respond to as many as I can .
Q17: OK..It seems politics is the new trend in the industry as many actors at some point have delved into politics-Like Kanayo.O.Kanayo.Desmond Elliot ,RMD, and most recently Yul Edochie who is contesting for the Governor of Anambra state;Do you see yourself going into politics in the nearest future?
Ken Erics: I really haven’t given that a thought but politics for me is not something I consider going into at the moment.I am still a Filmmaker and an actor.I honestly do not know if i will delve into politics anytime soon.
Q18: You have acted with many actresses,in all you seem to have great chemistry with but who would you say gives you what you want artistically?
Ken Erics: Most of the actresses I have worked with are actually good. There is one thing about acting,It is a give-n-take thing[Iron sharpeneth Iron].The truth is when you have substance as an actor ,you are most likely to get paired with people who have same qualities most of the times,it may not be all the time but most of the times. For me,I have been lucky to have worked with a lot of fantastic actresses so I may not pinpoint who the best is among all but I believe I have connected and had good chemistry with all I have worked with.
Q19: Checking out the industry right now,I have come to discover after much research and questionaires that Nollywood is bedeviled with a whole lot of irregularities, lack of creative contents, immoralities,Who is to be blamed for the happenings in the industry that has stalled progress ?Actors??The Directors?Producers??
Ken Erics: For me,every director should be held responsible for any bad work.I always set out to achieve excellence; Its either done well or not done at all.I turn down scripts not because I don’t want to work but because I don’t want to be associated with some kind of work,In other words,I would always blame the Director for any bad film.If you want the best, you choose a good story, you go for the best cast and you get the best.
Q20: What is that annoying habit of yours that your fans don’t know about?
Ken Erics: Eeeeh!ok…I hardly place calls across to friends.
Q21: Aside acting,do you do music?
Ken Erics: I used to although now I play music in the comfort of my home but not professionally.
Q22: You have just been nominated by the CityPeoplesAward in the best actor category alongside other A-list actors,do you see yourself coming top in the end?
Ken Erics: I actually don’t know what the outcome would be but I feel so excited and humbled to be nominated with such heavyweights.I really feel elated to be nominated alongside icons like RMD,Ramsey Noah,Kenneth okonkwo;People I have always looked up to,that alone is enough recognition for me.So whatever happens that day,I would be happy for myself and for whoever wins.
Q23: Wow!Its been a great time with you Sir,finally your last words for the upcoming actors?
Ken Erics: Keep being real;Keep being you;Give your dream your all;Don’t sludge;Don’t stop nor slumber;Avail yourself of every opportunity;Make yourself available for every audition if you really intend to be an actor;Make every opportunity a priority;Pray, work hard,go to school, get a degree and become somebody.God bless you.
