Robert Alai MCA
Alai started his career at Telkom Kenya as an intern where he was engaged as a logistics officer by the UN Mission in Congo after a short period, which caused him to migrate to Tanzania. His contract expired in 2007. He founded Kazi Africa Limited, which connects job seekers with companies and later sold it. Also, he created and later sold My African Career, his second web platform.
However, in 2007, he returned to Kenya from Tanzania. During the election, Alai began using his internet platform to keep Kenyans informed and engaged. He used to operate the website Techmtaa.com, which he ultimately sold, and is the current owner of the well-known news website Kahawatungu.com.
Prior to the 2022 general elections in Kenya, Alai joined politics and was originally to run for an MP seat in Nyando Kisumu county his hometown but was persuaded by the ODM boss Raila Odinga to run for Kieleleshwa MCA seat which successfully earned him an honorable member. Later, he beat out competition from 8 other aspirants to clinch the ticket, garnering 638 votes against his closest contender Junior Tollo who managed 545 votes.

Robert Alai was arrested on 17 June 2019 in Nairobi and detained for 14 days for sharing gory photos of police officers who were killed by an IED attack in Wajir. During the trial of the Westgate shopping mall attack in Nairobi where around 65 people were killed, Alai was commended, both by local and international media for his convenient and innovative use of social media, mainly Twitter, to provide updates of what was happening at the mall.
His accounts were regarded as being more accurate than – and sometimes disagreeing with- the updates supplied by the authorities.

Ndegwa Muhoro, the Kenya CID Chief, instructed the arrest of Robert Alai in December 2014 for allegedly sharing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s contacts on Twitter. He was accordingly charged “with undermining Uhuru”. Alai’s Twitter handle @robertalai was stopped on 18 December 2014 but was thereafter reinstated.
