He became a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. In November 1970 He was charged with felony theft. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge, a misdemeanor, in early 1971. He converted from Pentecostalism to Islam in the year 1972. In 1973, he legally changed his name to Ahmad Rashād.
He was the fourth overall selection of the 1972 NFL Draft, taken by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played wide receiver and wingback as a sophomore at Oregon in 1969. In 1971, he moved to running back. Ahmad was an All-American in the same backfield with quarterback Dan Fouts.
On 9th May, 2007, he was named to the College Football Hall of Fame. He played, for two seasons, for the Cardinals. He also played for the Buffalo Bills in 1974. He however, missed the 1975 season after a knee injury in the final pre-season game. After signing as a free agent, he was in the training camp of the expansion Seattle Seahawks.
Rashād was then traded to the Minnesota Vikings days before the start of the 1976 regular season. He played forthe Minnesota Vikings for six years (1976–1982). He earned four Pro Bowl selections from 1978 to 1981 while playing for the team.
The Vikings made it back to the Super Bowl that season, their last appearance through 2018. His professional football career made him a great star. He caught 495 passes for 6,831 yards and 44 touchdowns, while also rushing for 52 yards. His most breathtaking catch of his career happened in a game against the Cleveland Browns. That was towards the end of 1980 .
Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer threw a Hail Mary pass to Rashād that resulted in a come-from-behind 28-23 victory. They also won a Central Division title for the Vikings.
