Early Life and Education
Alan went to Kean College (now Kean University) in New Jersey from 1976-1979, majoring in English and Theatre. During college, he got involved with and later ran a local game club called the Jersey Wargamers. He also began to write articles about games for The General, the house magazine of the Avalon Hill Game Company.
After college in 1979, he was hired by AH and moved to Baltimore, MD. He became the assistant editor of The General with the expectation that he would take over as the editor after a short apprenticeship. However, when he started work at AH, he got involved developing games, and found out he likedd developing games a lot more than editing a magazine.

Alam was born in his grandmother’s house at 105 Oak Tree Rd. in Southampton, England. His father was a librarian who dreamed of coming to America, but at the time this was difficult because of the immigration quotas. When he was 5, his father took a job as the director of the library in St. John’s, Newfoundland, hoping he could get into the United States from Canada. Two years later, he succeeded by becoming the editor of Library Journal magazine, and we moved to Brooklyn, New York. Less than a year later, they moved to New Jersey.
When he was a kid, every Sunday was family day. His father, mother, brother, and him would spend the day bowling, playing miniature golf, going to the movies, etc., and then ending the day at home playing games. They played all the American classics like MONOPOLY, CAREERS, and FACTS IN FIVE, as well as lots of traditional card games like HEARTS and OH HELL.
His father taught him CHESS when he was a teenager and he beat him year after year before he finally won. His parents also taught him BRIDGE. But his most memorable game experiences as a child occurred when his Uncle Bryan would come to visit. His father, his uncle, his brother, and he would play RISK. This was some of the most intense gaming he has experienced, as there was no such thing as brotherly love during games of RISK in the Moon family.

The wedding and the events surrounding it were a wonderful weekend full of family and friends that he will always cherish. Janet is a lawyer, formerly working as a Immigration Attorney in Syracuse. Janet has also recently become a wonderful gourmet cook. In 2022, we moved to New Orleans. It’s a super fun place to live.

Career
Moon has been making games for a long time. He worked for different game companies like Avalon Hill and Parker Brothers. His first game was called Black Spy, and it came out in 1981. But the game that really made people notice him was Airlines, which a German company published in 1990.
Moon started his own company, White Wind, in 1990, but he ran it only until 1997. Now, he releases his games through other companies like Ravensburger and Days of Wonder.
Since 2000, Moon has been a full-time game designer, creating many games. He’s received awards for his games, like the Spiel des Jahres twice. Elfenland won in 1998, and Ticket to Ride won in 2004. Ticket to Ride has even won many other awards around the world.
