Alastair Fothergill Biography
Alastair Fothergill is a producer of nature documentaries for TV and cinema from Britain. He is famous for being the series producer of the 2001 series The Blue Planet, the Brit TV series, Planet Earth and the co-director of the associated feature films Deep Blue and Earth.
Fothergill had a highly acclaimed career at the BBC’s Natural History Unit. Alastair has been at the forefront of natural history programming for over 30 years.
Alastair Fothergill Career
While still a student studying zoology at St Cuthbert’s Society in the University of Durham, he made his first film, On the Okavango. In 1983, he joined the BBC Natural History Unit. There he worked on The Really Wild Show, Wildlife on One and David Attenborough’s The Trials of Life. In 1992, he was appointed the head of the Unit. In his tenure, he was the producer behind Attenborough’s award-winning series Life in the Freezer.
Alastair was awarded the Royal Geographical Society’s Cherry Kearton Medal and Award in 1996.
He stepped down as head of the Natural History Unit in June of 1998. This was in a bid to concentrate on his work as the series producer on the multi-award-winning The Blue Planet. He finished his next major series Planet Earth in June of 1998.

He was lauded as executive producer of Frozen Planet in 2011 and the 2015 Brit nature documentary series, The Hunt.
Additionally, he has also presented several TV programmes, including The Abyss. He is also the author of three books.

He signed a multi-picture deal with newly formed Disneynature in 2008. Currently, he now spends six months each year on sabbatical from the BBC. The debut titles under the Disneynature deal have been, African Cats in 2011, Chimpanzee in 2012, Bears in 2014, and Penguins in 2019. The aforementioned nature documentaries have been co-directed with Keith Scholey, Mark Linfield, and Jeff Wilson respectively.
He was made a Fellow of the Royal Television Society in 2016. This was for his work in natural history programming.
