The 24 and Designated Survivor star is already prepping a second record, and will kick off his Reckless Tour in Nashville this spring.
So why did it take the Emmy winner so long to pursue this new career? His answer is refreshingly honest. “I’m acutely aware of the stigma of an actor doing music, and I didn’t want to ever enter into that.”
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Sutherland revealed that he’d originally only planned to write music for other artists, until Jude Cole – who produced his debut Down in a Hole – convinced him to perform the material himself.
“I said, ‘Absolutely not’. I explained why. But he’s known me for thirty-some-odd years, so he took me to a bar. We had a couple of drinks, and all of a sudden it sounded like a better idea.”
Sutherland says that working on his first album’s worth of material with Cole helped him to overcome any further hesitation, telling us: “I had to have that moment where I went, ‘No, I actually really like these songs, and I like the way they sound’.
“I had gotten to a point in my life where if someone was going to take the piss out of me for that – OK, I get it. But I also got to a point where I really did like the songs, and at some point you’ve got to stand up for that.”
Still, embarking on his first tour back in 2016, Sutherland feared he would be faced with cynical audiences, some there out of morbid curiosity. “I would have to say that most of the people that came to the first tour probably came to see a train wreck.
“It’s our job – me and the band, it’s our job to put on a good show. It’s really that simple. You put on a good show and let it speak for itself, and time will take care of the rest – hopefully.”
Down in a Hole debuted at No. 18 on the Americana/Folk Albums chart, with Sutherland earning a warm reaction for his “unexpected, unvarnished authenticity” (Associated Press) and “edgy vocals blended with passion” (Rolling Stone).
“[Here] you have the first Hollywood hobby act unshackled by convention and with a real shot at greatness,” enthused The Guardian.
But while the Reckless Tour will start off in the safe spaces of Nashville and Kansas City, it’ll also take his brand of folk-tinged country across Europe and to the UK.
“It’s not the music that’s dominating, or even present on, any radio format in Europe,” he admits. “But I think European audiences, they’re interested in experiencing something new. And I also feel very strongly that even if a type of music is not your go-to genre – if it’s authentic, it will have an impact.”
Both Down in a Hole and its follow-up are described as “very personal” records, reflecting on experiences in Sutherland’s own life, and while he’s performed live on stage as an actor, playing his music to an audience is, he says, like no other experience.
“When I took these songs out, it required me to open up… and I’ve spent my entire life doing the opposite – trying to protect my private life.
“So that took a moment. I had to commit to really saying, ‘Some of these songs aren’t really flattering to me – this is something I went through, and this is something that I had to deal with’, or ‘This song’s about someone that passed away really early on in my life, and it had a real effect on me.’
“Once I opened up about all of that stuff, the shows got better.
“I can almost pinpoint it. There was a show in Ann Arbor. It was the first show. It was a seated audience. I was nervous about that. But it was a great audience, and instead of just going from track to track, I started talking about the songs.
“The way I played them started to change. It was kind of a great moment. And that’s when the touring became an experience for me that’s unlike anything I’ve done before. And it mattered really deeply to me.
“That’s why when most people would take a vacation after shooting eight-and-a-half months of Designated Survivor, or any television show, we’re going to go do 42 dates in the US, and another 20 in Europe!”
