André Vermeulen in Portugal: “The bed and breakfast where we were last night, is largely burned out”
Updated: 06 Aug 2018.
A bed and breakfast of Belgian operators in Portugal has largely been burned out. That was what the VRT team saw with André Vermeulen today, when they went back to Monchique in the Algarve with the owners. “This is not only a human disaster, but also a financial setback.”
Last night, during “Het Journaal” at 7 pm André Vermeulen did a live report about the heavy forest fires in Portugal, from the terrace of the bed and breakfast of Gerrit Wouters and Ann S’heeren.
The bed & breakfast had to be evacuated very quickly last night because a new fire was created nearby. The VRT team and the guests of the establishment had to take their stuff, jump into their cars and look for safer places. As the latter, the owners left the b & b, asking whether their case would survive the advancing fire.
Today the VRT-team with the owners retreated to Monchique, to regret to say that the house of Gerrit and Ann has not been spared. “It has become a drama for the operators,” says André Vermeulen. “Fortunately, there were no casualties, no deaths, but the house of Gerrit and Ann is largely burned out.”
On the way to the house, the VRT team saw that the entire valley around it had been completely burnt down. When they came closer, they saw that the house of Gerrit and Ann is still there, but that it is largely burnt down: the contents have gone up in flames and the fire has been struck through the roof, as can be seen in the report below.
Unfortunately, Gerrit and Ann are only partly insured. “Because the procedure to get full insurance was very long and had not yet been completed”, says André Vermeulen.
“This is not only a human disaster for the operators but also a financial setback for these two people who have invested a lot over the past two years and have been working to build a new business. Everything is gone in one fell swoop. ”
