Mitchell was born on 30 October 1946, in New Rochelle, New York. She attended New Rochelle High School. She went on to join the University of Pennsylvania where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature in 1967. She served at the WXPN, the student radio as the news director.

On July 31, 1978, Mitchell started working for NBC News. She became the Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News in November 1994. She formerly was the Chief White House Correspondent between 1993 and 1994. Between 1988 and 1992, she served as the Chief Congressional Correspondent.
Mitchell moved to WTOP the CBS-affiliate now called WUSA in 1976. It is stationed in Washington, D.C. After two years she began serving as a general correspondent for NBC’S News operation.
