Andrea Smith Biography
Andrea Smith is an American academic, feminist, and activist against violence whose work focuses on issues of violence against women of color and their communities, specifically Native American women.
A founding member of INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence, the Boarding School Healing Project, and Women of All Red Nations’ Chicago chapter, Smith based her advocacy and scholarship on the lives of colored women, claiming to be Cherokee for a long time. Formerly an assistant professor of American Culture and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Smith currently serves as a professor at the University of California ‘s Department of Ethnic Studies, Riverside.
In July 2015, Smith gained national attention for claiming Cherokee identity without the Cherokee nation’s proof or acceptance. Smith said that her “enrolment status does not affect [her] Cherokee identity” and that she has always been and always will be Cherokee. Five Cherokee women scholars released a public statement rejecting Smith’s Cherokee claims as false, noting that she was and will always be Cherokee. Other Native scholars have also dismissed her arguments, claiming her actions have undermined faith between native and non-indigenous scholars. David Cornsilk, a Cherokee genealogist, states that she has no family relations with known ancestors or relatives of the Cherokee.

Andrea Smith Career
Smith ‘s main work focuses on genocide and acts of violence against aboriginal people. She addresses patriarchy as an instrument of colonial oppression used by settlers to subdue and suppress indigenous people. In her text Conquest: Sexual Abuse And American Indian Genocide, Smith gives a genealogical analysis of state-sanctioned brutality against indigenous people from the early American to the 19th century, and against their reproductive health.
Smith’s work allows a critical intervention in Native American Studies that she claims continues to ignore patriarchy as beyond the scope of Native Scholarship ‘s study. Most native scholars reject patriarchy because they recognize it as a peculiar Western phenomenon imposed by assimilation upon indigenous peoples. Smith argues that despite the fact that patriarchy is not central to Native culture, its fundamental role, in particular, in the exploitation and extermination of indigenous peoples and indigenous women, should not be dismissed.
