Speaking of his early life, Aydin, who grew up reading comic books, was raised by a single mother, Anne Lynn Van Buren, an entrepreneur and a master gardener, who died on June 28, 2017, of rare brain disease at Emory University Hospital, where she was born.

Van Buren grew up in Atlanta, graduating from Sylvan High School and working full-time to put herself through Georgia State University. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, she developed a passion for the city’s in-town neighborhoods, which she parlayed into a 20-year sideline of restoring old and in-need-of-repair homes.

Van Buren worked at Southern Bell during the day and would spend every penny and every spare hour rehabilitating homes in the Inman Park area, her son said.

She married in 1980 and had son Andrew Van Buren Aydin three years later. When she and her husband divorced, “he left taking everything, including the toilet paper,” Aydin said.

Van Buren quit work and devoted all of her energies to raising her son, although she later took jobs with the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and the preschool at St. James Methodist Church in Brookhaven

“She was determined Andrew was going to have a good upbringing,” said her aunt, Pattie Ivy of Athens. “She wanted him to be the best.”

She and her son took road trips to national parks, historic sites, museums, and gardens that would last several weeks during summers.

Reading was one of her passions, and she perpetually had stacks of library books at her bedside for Andrew.

Van Buren also encouraged her son’s love of comic books, allowing him to attend comic book conventions starting when he was 12 and regularly taking him to comic book stores.

“She sacrificed everything for me,” Aydin said. “She gave me the opportunity to have a great life.”

After the school day, Van Buren would be waiting at home ready to hear about Andrew’s day and how he was feeling. Their daily discussions continued into his college years and through Van Buren’s final days, he said.

As her son entered high school, Van Buren decided to follow her passion and enroll in the Georgia Master Gardener program. Her service project involved beautification of one of her favorite places, the Sandy Springs public library. After completing the program, she continued her studies in plant sciences, earning a degree in horticulture at Gwinnett Technical College.

Janice Shackelton, a longtime neighbor from Brookhaven, said Van Buren “was very independent and strong, raising Andrew as a single mom.”

She regularly took on big projects with a passion and saw them to completion, Shackelton said.

One example, she said, was Fernbrook Farm, a 20-acre family farm near Henderson, N.C., that Van Buren built and lived in after Aydin was off at college.

The home was almost complete when Shackelton came for a visit. A spectacular acre of sunflowers lined the driveway, leading to a beautiful stone house that was Van Buren’s creation, she said. The family described Van Buren as tenacious, outspoken, beautiful, and hardworking.

Aydin served as District Aide to Representative John B. Larson (D-CT) and as Special Assistant to Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Kevin Sullivan after college.

He started working for Georgia congressman John lewis in 2007 and in the summer of 2008, while on Rep. Lewis’ reelection campaign, Aydin learned that Lewis had been inspired as a young man by a classic 1957 comic book, Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story.

So the two agreed to write a comic book together after discussing the impact that comic books have about his time in the civil rights movements. Aydin wrote a graduate thesis on the history and impact of Martin Luther King and the Montogomery Story.

Until 2012, no history of the comic book had been written, and most versions of how the comic was created, listed AI Capp as the actual creator. As first of his graduate degree at Georgetown University, Aydin wrote the first long-form history of The Montogomery Story as his graduate thesis.

With the help of comic book icon, Eddie Campbell, and Carlow University professor Dr. Sylvia Rhor, Aydin was able to establish of what we know about the comics creation and its use. In 2013, Aydin published a shortened version of his thesis as the future article in Creative Loafing’s award-winning “Future of Nonviolence” issue, which was guest-edited by Lewis and Aydin.

Currently serving as Digital Director and Policy Advisor to Representative Lewis in his Washington D.C. office, Aydin has also appeared as a guest on The Rachel Maddow Show, Morning Joe, CBS This Morning, CNN, BBC, and National Public Radio.

March trilogy is a book is an autobiographical black and white graphic novel about the Civil Rights Movement, published by Top Shelf Productions, written by Lewis and Aydin, illustrated and lettered by Nate Powell and told through the perspective of Lewis.

The book had its beginnings in Lewis’ 2008 reelection campaign when Lewis mentioned to Aydin about The Montogomery Story and its influence on the civil rights movement. Aydin bought him a copy of Uncanny X-Men #317 off a Piggly Wiggly spinner rack when he was eight years old, found a digital copy of the book on the Internet, and spent years tracking down an original print copy on eBay.

The first volume, March: Book One, which was published in August 2013, hold s an average 9.4 out of 10 ratings at the review aggregator website Comic book Roundup, based on five reviews.

It also received numerous awards and accolades, was selected for college-level reading lists, and by first-year reading programs in 2014 at Michigan State University, Marquette University, and Georgia State University, received an “Author Honor” from the American Library Association’s 2014 Coretta Scott King Book Awards, and became the first graphic novel to win a Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, receiving a “Special Recognition” bust in 2014.

Its second volume, March: Book Two, which was released the following year after Book One became Washington Post best seller for paperback nonfiction books and New York Times bestseller for paperback graphic novels. Moreover, the book won the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for “Best Reality-Based Work”, in July 2016, at San Diego Comic-Con.

March: Book Three was published in August 2016, along with a slipcase edition of the  March trilogy. Actually, the book brought all the three volumes into the top three slots of the NewYork Times bestseller list for graphic novels for six consecutive weeks.

The book was also awarded the National Book Award in Young People’s Literature, becoming the first graphic novel to receive a National Book Award.
