Andy Lack is a businessman, film executive, and television executive. He was the chairman of NBC News and MSNBC from 2015 to 2020. Prior to NBCUniversal, Lack held a series of media executive positions, including as the chairman and CEO of Bloomberg Media Group; chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment; and president and chief operating officer of NBC.

He began his career as a journalist and then producer at CBS, winning 10 Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards as a television producer.

Career

After graduating he worked as a producer of TV commercials, joined CBS News in 1976, followed the next year with 60 Minutes, and from 1978 until 1985, produced CBS Reports. He also served as a correspondent on The American-Israeli Connection in 1982. Lack worked with Bill Moyers during the early 80s, as producer of both Our Times With Bill Moyers (1983) and Crossroads (1984).

In 1976, Lack started his career at CBS News as a producer for the show Who’s Who, created by 60 Minutes’ Don Hewitt. This led to a role as a producer for 60 Minutes, where he worked on impactful segments such as “Inside Afghanistan” and “Kissinger and The Oil Embargo.” Notably, he wrote and directed “The Real Malcolm X: An Intimate Portrait of the Man.”

Later, he became the executive producer for CBS Reports, followed by a four-year term as the executive producer of West 57th, a news program known for its innovative storytelling. His contributions include noteworthy pieces like “The Boat People,” “Teddy” (about Ted Kennedy), and “The Defense of the United States” with Walter Cronkite.

In 1993, Lack took on the role of president of NBC News, tasked with restoring credibility after a scandal involving the faking of an explosion on Dateline. Under his leadership, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw rose to become the top-rated evening news program within three years, surpassing ABC News’ World News Tonight.

Lack expanded Dateline and, after Bryant Gumbel’s departure from the Today show, appointed Matt Lauer as the new anchor, leading Today to become the highest-rated morning news show for the next 16 years. He also played a key role in the creation of MSNBC. In 2001, Lack transitioned to president and chief operating officer of NBC, the television network.

In 2015, Lack returned to NBC News and MSNBC amidst a crisis triggered by Brian Williams’ suspension for misrepresenting events during the Iraq War, coupled with declining ratings for Today and MSNBC. Lack appointed Lester Holt as the new anchor for NBC Nightly News, which reclaimed its top spot in ratings.

After Williams’ suspension, Lack reintegrated him as the breaking news anchor for MSNBC, focusing on hard news. He streamlined collaboration between NBC News and MSNBC, canceled opinion-based shows, and boosted ratings, with MSNBC’s daytime viewership increasing over 100%. Lack also oversaw the unification of NBC News and MSNBC’s digital operations.

In 2017, Lack hired Megyn Kelly from Fox News, but her tenure faced controversy, leading to her departure in 2018. In 2019, Ronan Farrow accused Lack of downplaying a rape complaint against Matt Lauer and obstructing his investigation into Harvey Weinstein.

NBC News denied the allegations, stating Farrow’s reporting was not ready for publication. In May 2020, NBCUniversal announced Lack’s departure as NBCUniversal Worldwide News Group President, and he resigned soon after.
