Born on August 16, 1958, in New York, New York, United States, Bassett is the son of Betty Jane (née Gilbert), a social worker and civil servant, the second wife of Daniel Benjamin Bassett, a preacher’s son. His middle name was given to her in honor of her aunt Evelyn.
However, ten months after Bassett was born, her mother became pregnant and had a second child, Bassett’s sister D’nette. Bassett said the pregnancy “only made things harder”, leading her parents to send her to her father’s sister, Golden, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While her aunt did not have any children of her own, she “loved children, and she became good with them.”
Bassett was picked up by her mother at the age of four after her parents divorced; her mother took her and her sister to St. Petersburg, Florida.
Bassett graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies in 1980 from Yale University. She studied acting at the Yale School of Drama and received a Master of Fine Arts in 1983.
