Ann made her film debut in the 1982 film Vortex. She came to the limelight with her role as a snarky cigarette girl in Desperately Seeking Susan. This helped her launch the acting career of singer Madonna. Ann was a lead vocalist for the Bongwater band where she performed in 1985 with Mrk Kramer, a producer-musician.
The band had released four albums and a debut EP before breaking up in 1992. It ended up with a legal battle between Ann and Kramer that went on till 1996 and ended with the bankruptcy of Kramer’s independent-music label Shimmy-Disc.
In 1990, Ann appeared in the music video “Annie’s Gone”. She also appeared in Jerry Cantrell’s music video “My Song.” Ann guest appeared in an episode of the Lifetime anthology The Hidden Room: the cult-hit, surrealistic comedy-drama The Adventures of Pete and Pete and Salute Your Shorts.
Ann began touring a one-woman stage show, Pretty Songs & Ugly Stories in 2003. She also played the role of Sister Elizabeth Donderstock in the play The Book of Liz. In 2005, she performed at the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center benefit series What A Pair!
