Antoinette Louw Biography
Antoinette Louw is a South Africa multi award-winning actress. She is best known for her role as Inge van Schalkwyk, the owner of the boutique, on the SABC2 soap opera 7de Laan, since 2004. Apart from being one of the regular cast on 7de Laan, Antoinette has also played the roles of Candy on Die Netwerk and Denise on Jacob’s Cross.

Antoinette was born in Pretoria. She is the daughter of Dap Louw and Anet Louw, both professors in psychology who have written psychology handbooks for South African universities together. She has a brother, Dap,a year younger than her who is a doctor in urology and an Ironman finisher. Antoinette was raised in Potchefstroom, Vanderbijlpark and Bloemfontein.

She attended school in the United States of America where her father did research and teaching at various universities. The family moved to Bloemfontein in 1991 and Antoinette matriculated in 1993 at Sentraal Hoërskool, Bloemfontein. She studied drama at the University of the Free State (UOFS) and receives her degree cum laude in 1996.
During her third year Antoinette tried her hand as producer and director of the play, The Woman Who Cooked her Husband, a black comedy by the British playwright Debbie Issit. This production was invited to perform in London at the Courtyard Theatre.

After AFDA Antoinette took a break from the entertainment industry for a couple of years. During which she lived in Malta, a small Mediterranean island, for a year. When she went back in South Africa, she decided to do that which she loved best that is acting and writing. Shortly after she arrived in Johannesburg, Antoinette landed the role of “Inge van Schalkwyk” in 7de Laan. The original contract of three weeks became two years.

After a few months in London Antoinette returned to South Africa and studied film acting at the South African School of Film and Dramatic Arts (AFDA) under the direction of award-winning playwright, Deon Opperman. During he time there she landed the lead in the M-Net shortfilm, Skidmarks. Antoinette was awarded both the AFDA and M-Net Awards for Best Film Actress for her role as Stacey, a second rate beauty queen.
She took a break from the entertainment industry for a couple of years after AFDA. During which she lived in Malta, a small Mediterranean island, for a year. However, after two years on the soap, she went back to her first love: the stage playing ‘Anna’ in the upsetting Dis ek, Anna. The stage adaptation of the popular Afrikaans book with the same title. While doing a play opposite South African icon Sandra Prinsloo in 2012, another South African icon, crime writer Deon Meyer, saw her and offered her the lead in his movie Die Laaste Tango. Antoinette went on to win a SAFTA Award the South African Oscar for her portrayal as the cancer stricken photographer, Ella Winter. She is the first Afrikaans actress to have been given this prestigious award. Many other film and TV roles followed, including – ‘n Man Soos My Pa (2015), Foto (2015), Nul Is Nie Niks Nie (2017), Voor Ek Val (2017), Swartwater (2017-2018), and Sew the Winter to My Skin (to be released in 2018). In theatre she has featured in the following: Engele Sonder Vlerke, Die Trommel Lead, Simple Bloody Simon, Dis ek, Anna And Afspraak.
She landed her first lead in an international film An Act of Defiance based on the life of Bram Fischer in 2016. The film is directed by well known Dutch Director Jean van de Velde. For her portrayel as Molly Fischer, Antoinette has already bagged the coveted Best Actress award at the Cape Town International Film and Market Festival 2017. An Act of Defiance was released in the Netherlands in 2017, and was released in South Africa in 2018. In the same year she received an ATKV-mediaveertjie Best Actress Award for her performance in the drama series, Swartwater.
Over the years Antoinette has shared the stage with some of South Africa’s most respected actors, including Deon Lotz, Sandra Prinsloo and Zane Meas. She is a column writer for the South African newspaper, Beeld
