Anton Du Beke Biography

Anton Du Beke (Anthony Paul Beke) is a British ballroom dancer, singer,  television presenter and author born on 20th July 1966 in Sevenoaks, Kent, England. He is best known as a professional ballroom dancer on the BBC One celebrity dancing show, Strictly Come Dancing, since the show began in 2004. He is an honorary patron of The Music Hall Guild of Great Britain and America.

He attended Wildernesse School in Sevenoaks. Anton’s interest in dance started at the age of fourteen when he was sent to a local dance class in Sevenoaks, Kent to meet his sister one evening. Classes soon began and he was hooked, realizing that this was the direction he wanted to take. He studied Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz and modern theatre dance. Anton was also a junior boxer and played county football, nevertheless, he still rather enjoyed being in a dance class full of girls!.

After leaving school at sixteen he worked a number of day-jobs to fund his dance training – stepping out onto the dancefloor in the evenings to develop his talent. At seventeen he was specializing in Ballroom and already competing as an amateur, naturally favoring the Foxtrot: classy, ultimately stylish and romantic — traits of his Hollywood idol, Fred Astaire, that rang true with Anton from an early age.

Anton met his professional dance partner Erin Boag in 1997. The pair soon began competing professionally, winning many national and international awards. The partnership flourished, winning the NZ Championships within a year, and retaining the title the following year.

Anton Du Beke caused a stir on Saturday night – and not because of his Jive with celebrity partner Emma Barton. The Strictly pro found himself the center of attention after his legs went viral! Strange as it may sound, Anton almost caused a social media meltdown when he was spotted in the training studio wearing a pair of shorts. His bare legs had viewers rushing to Twitter to express their astonishment that he wasn’t wearing his usual suit and tie – even though he was just rehearsing his routine.

But during an appearance on Strictly: It Takes Two on Tuesday with Emma, Anton told Rylan Clark-Neal that he was “overwhelmed” by the public’s reaction after he was told by Rylan that his legs almost broke the internet. “I am overwhelmed by that,” he said, before joking that he “likes to keep a few things covered up”. Anton du Beke is part of the Strictly furniture, although his performance on the dancefloor is anything but wooden! He’s been on the team since the first series, partnering with the likes of Laila Rouass, Patsy Palmer, Jan Ravens, Jerry Hall, Judy Murray and Gillian Taylforth over the years.

But it’s his more comedic pairings that Anton is best remembered for: the unintentionally funny routines with both Nancy Dell’Olio and former MP Ann Widdecombe are the stuff of Strictly legend. In fact, Ann and Anton even made it all the way to the Quarter Final in 2010, despite scoring consistently low marks throughout the series. One memorable routine saw Ann fly in over the stage to the dancefloor, earning her the nickname “Starship Widdecombe” by Bruno Tonioli.

But 2015 was a different story, with Anton finally within reach of the Glitterball trophy. An inspired pairing with Proms and Radio 3 presenter Katie Derham saw him dance his way to the Grand Final and nab the fourth place. But in 2016, his experience was a slightly shorter but no less sweet, only making it to Week Five with partner Lesley Joseph. He fared better in 2017, bowing out in Week Eight with TV presenter Ruth Langsford. In 2018 he partnered up with fashion expert Susannah Constantine, but despite their perfectly matched sense of humor, the duo wasn’t a match for the competition and was the first couple to leave.
