Tarver is a former professional boxer who competed from 1997 to 2015. He held multiple light heavyweight world championships, including the WBA (Unified), WBC, IBF, and Ring magazine titles, as well as the IBO light heavyweight and cruiserweight titles. He began boxing at a young age and excelled as an amateur, winning gold medals at the 1995 Pan American Games, 1995 World Championships, and 1996 Olympic Trials.

In 2003, he defeated Roy Jones Jr. by unanimous decision to win the WBC, IBF, and WBA light heavyweight titles.
Tarver rebounded from his loss to Hopkins by winning the IBO light heavyweight title in 2005. He then moved up to the cruiserweight division and won the WBA cruiserweight title in 2006.
