Ella releases new record after 10-year wait
IT’S been a long time coming for fans of Malaysia’s Queen of Rock Ella, who have been waiting for the release of the singer’s latest album.
Finally, a decade after the release of her last album, Rama Rama, the 51-year-old presented her fans with an eight-track album.
Ella, whose real name is Norzila Aminuddin, has dedicated a song to her husband, Azhar Ghazali, 36.
The song is entitled Peace.Love.Rindu. Composed by Lord, it is also the title of the album.
“There’s a story behind the tune, which sums up what we feel for each other,” she said at the album launch at Le Meridien in Kuala Lumpur last week.
“But it’s not about the usual quarrel-and-make up kind of story.
“It’s more than that,” said Ella, who tied the knot with Azhar in 2012.
The album took two years to complete since the singer was particular in selecting songs.
“I had to choose songs that would suit my hijab-wearing image,” said Ella, who started donning the headscarf last year.
Besides Lord, who is Ella’s old buddy from her Ella & The Boys’ days, the album also features songs composed by Datuk M. Nasir, Edrie Hashim, Omar K, Ezra Kong, AG Coco, Sam Bunkface, Keon, Buddhi Hikayat and Ad Samad.
Ella also expressed her joy for her sister, Jojie, who, together with her husband, Syahrizal Ismail, adopted a baby girl they named Maryam, recently.
However, the music legend said she was not ready to talk about doing the same thing.
“But I’m happy for them for their new addition to the family. I suppose for me, I’ll cross the bridge when I come to it.
“For now, my focus is on this baby,” she said, referring to her new record.

Malaysian singer Ella is rockin’ it at 50
More than three decades after she started out in show business, singer Ella is still Malaysia’s undisputed “Ratu Rock” or rock queen.
Last month, the country’s entertainment and media industry honoured the 50-year-old with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian awards show.
The crown is not one she wears lightly, she tells The Straits Times in a telephone interview from Kuala Lumpur. “I find it tough. I’m thankful, but having that title means I have to always work harder.”
Ella, whose real name is Norzila Haji Aminuddin, will mark her 30th anniversary as a singer with a show at the Esplanade Concert Hall on July 22. It is part of Pesta Raya, the Esplanade’s annual Malay arts
She is excited about playing her first solo concert here in 20 years. “While I’ve performed in Singapore a few times with other artists or at private shows, my fans are always asking when I’ll be back to do a
full solo show. I think now is the right time.”
She has roped in Mac Chew, a fellow Malaysian known for his work with regional stars such as Hong Kong singers Sandy Lam and Karen Mok, as music director. “I’ll be playing all the hits my fans want to hear, but they’re going to hear these songs in a different light as we’ll be giving them fresh arrangements.”
Born in Penang and raised in Selangor, she began her career singing in Kuala Lumpur’s club circuit in the early 1980s. She has released more than 30 records either as a solo singer or with other acts, including the band she made her debut with, Ella & The Boys.
She found greater success after striking it out on her own. Her first three solo albums – Pengemis Cinta (1988), Puteri Kota (1989) and Identiti (1990) – achieved platinum sales in Malaysia. She has also acted in films such as Bayangan Maut (1990) and KIL (2013).
She plans to release a new album next month, which comes 10 years after her last studio album, Rama Rama.
Aside from her hijab (headscarf), which she started wearing last year, many of her fans have remarked that she looks and sounds the same as she did in the 1980s. The singer, who married pilot Azhar Ghazali in 2012, says there is no formula behind her ability to maintain her looks and voice. “There’s no secret – I guess I just try to always be happy.”
Ella is determined to get pregnant
Even at 48, rock queen Ella still harbours hope to one day hear the pitter-patter of little feet.
Realising that conceiving may be difficult and even dangerous at her age, she is still determined and is exhausting all avenues to make her dream of having her own child come true.
For a start, Ella, who tied the knot to pilot Azhar Ghazali three years ago, is currently adding Sunnah foods (natural ingredients prescribed as normative based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and the Quran) into her diet.
“I’ve started including dates, honey and milk as part of my diet to help cleanse my internal system,” she said, adding that by doing so, the possibilities of falling pregnant would be higher.
Besides following doctor’s orders to eat well and stay healthy, Ella has also undergone fertility treatments to help her conceive.
“I can’t just wait for a miracle to happen without putting any effort. I have to do something and I am working towards it,” said the singer in an interview at Saloma Bistro here, yesterday.
“I love kids, and I really want my own. Please have me in your prayers,” said Ella, with a smile.
Ella, who has 28 albums under her belt, is currently busy preparing for the release of her new record entitled Istimewah.
“Sixty per cent of the album is completed. And we are still in the midst of choosing the right songs for this album,” she said.
She will be flying out to London tomorrow to perform at a private event, as well as to film the music video for Istimewah, which is also the title track of the album.
At the same time, Ella will also be in London to film a travelogue, a special project with a local telco company. However, details are still sketchy.
“Back in 1994, I made an album in the US called Ella USA. Perhaps this travelogue will be similar to that. We’ll see,” she said.
Upon returning from London, Ella will be extremely busy as she will be helping out her sister-manager Jojie who is tying the knot on June 5.
