Sharifah Sakinah Interview
Sharifah Sakinah quit law studies to act
Star2 – December 3, 2015
Sharifah Sakinah was determined to make it on her own when she first ventured into showbusiness.
So much so, her sisters – popular 1990s actress Sharifah Haslinda (or Lynn) and comedian Sharifah Shahira (or Shira) – didn’t know anything about her acting dreams until they saw her on TV one day!
“I didn’t want to use them as a platform (to get a head start in her career). They didn’t even know that I wanted to be a part of this industry,” the bubbly 26-year-old actress says during an interview.
“If I told them, I knew what they were going to say. They’d tell me to go to school.”
Sakinah read law at a local university for a while but eventually gave that up to pursue acting.
“I started as a nobody. I was an extra and then I got supporting roles. I can’t be a heroine straightaway, I had to start from the bottom,” she shares.
Viewers began to take notice of Sakinah after her performance in Hotel Mania in 2010. While she wanted no help from her sisters, the Kuala Lumpur-born beauty says she does look to them as references especially for her latest role in horror-thriller Maria Terindah.
The 30-episode HyppTV drama directed by Kabir Bhatia and Norhanisham Muhamad (Labu) sees the actress playing two lead roles, Maria and Indah. The drama begins with newlyweds Aris (Shahz Jaszle) and Maria who seem to have it all.
But Maria mysteriously disappears one day. Aris, still unable to find his missing wife, meets Indah who bears a striking resemblance to Maria. Indah says she doesn’t know Maria but Aris is determined to uncover the truth.
“Maria is very innocent, she’s very polite. Indah is very tough and free-spirited,” she describes the characters.
Interestingly, she says she is able to draw parallels between the two fictional roles and her two sisters: “When I’m playing Maria, I based it on my sister Lynn and when I’m playing Indah, I based it on my sister Shira.”
Sakinah says she actually plays more than two roles, as Maria undergoes a number of personality shifts as the show progresses.
“Sometimes I mix the characters up,” she admits, adding she is grateful to her directors for guiding her.
Sakinah was also involved in hosting the fitness reality series Astro Bella Jom Kurus Cabaran 30 Hari with fitness guru Kevin Zahri which concluded recently.
“I was interested in this programme because other reality shows are usually about looking for stars or creating drama,” she enthuses.
The show saw 12 contestants undergoing various physical challenges within 30 days to lose weight and win a cash prize of RM20,000.
“We had a contestant who wanted to lose weight so she could get pregnant and another contestant who dreamed of becoming a flight attendant. That’s the type of drama we wanted. Not the drama where people are hating each other,” she shares.
Speaking of drama, Sakinah has had her share of controversies herself; netizens have criticised her attention-grabbing Keek videos back in 2013 as well as her daring fashion choices.
“I’m not going to reply to every comment on social media and voice out my opinions. All I have to do is make my voice heard with the work I have been doing – my acting and my TV shows. I don’t care about the controversy but I care about my work,“ she offers.
The actress, who tied the knot early this year with 27-year-old pilot Aliff Adha, also dishes about married life. Sakinah says little has changed since the wedding as they’ve both been busy.
“When I go to work, he accompanies me until I finish filming late at night. That’s the the only time we have, and then he flies off again,” she describes life with her husband.
Sakinah, who only sees Aliff two to three times a week, isn’t worried about not being with him on a daily basis.
“I know I’m going to live with him until I die. So we can chill a bit,” she says.
