Audrey Strauss Attorney General

Strauss served as an Assistant United States Attorney at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York From 1976 to 1983. She later served as Chief of Appeals in the Criminal Division and Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Unit.  Upon leaving the Southern District, she worked as a staff attorney at Alcoa and senior litigation partner at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. Strauss returned to the Southern District of New York in 2018, serving under U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman.

On June 19, 2020, Attorney General William Barr announced that Geoffrey Berman had stepped down from his position as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District. Berman had led several investigations into associates of Donald Trump, including Rudy Giuliani.

In response, Berman released a statement refuting the statements of his resignation, claiming that, as he had been nominated by a committee of judges on the Southern District of New York, he would not leave his position until a successor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate. On June 20, 2020, William Barr alleged that the president had fired Berman and named Strauss as Berman’s successor, to serve in an acting capacity until a nominee is confirmed.

Trump had denied having a direct role in the firing. Berman later agreed to step down now that Barr had respected “the normal operation of law” by appointing his deputy as interim U.S. attorney.
