In early 2014, PKR’s national leader, Anwar Ibrahim, then a federal parliamentarian sought to contest the Selangor State Assembly seat of Kajang in a by-election. Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has withdrawn his appeal at the Court of Appeal over his suit to compel the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to extradite businessman Low Taek Jho to Malaysia in relation to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) controversy.
Azmin’s lawyer Latheefa Koya said her client withdrew his appeal against the IGP on Tuesday (May 22).
“My client decided to withdraw the appeal due to the fact the new government has clearly shown commitment to investigate into the 1MDB scandal including the apprehension of Jho Low,” Latheefa told media on Wednesday (May 23).
She said Azmin sought for a mandamus order to compel the IGP to take all necessary steps to arrest and bring back Low to face criminal charges in Malaysia.
Azmin who is also the Selangor Mentri Besar, filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal after a High Court dismissed his judicial review application on Oct 3 last year on grounds that there was no arguable
case.
In the judicial review application filed on Aug 14 last year, Azmin had named the IGP as the respondent.
Azmin had sought a mandamus order to compel the IGP to detain and produce Low before a magistrate’s court in Malaysia for criminal charges under Section 409 and 420 or for any other offences.
He said Low had committed offences including criminal breach of trust and cheating which caused 1MDB to suffer losses.
