Benjamin Zephaniah Career
Benjamin writes his poetry influenced by the music and poetry of Jamaica, to him, “street politics”. At the age of 11, he did his first performance in the church. At the age of 15, his poetry was known among Handsworth’s Afro-Caribbean and Asian communities. Benjamin once served a prison sentence for burglary.
At the age of 20, he went to London. He wanted to have a bigger audience apart from the black people. Benjamin became involved in a workers’ co-operative in Stratford, London. This led him to publish his first book of poetry, Pen Rhythm (Page One Books, 1980). His mission was to fight the dead image of poetry in academia and to “take everywhere” to people who do not read books, so he turned poetry readings into concert-like performances.
In 1985, Benjamin wrote his second poetry, The Dread Affair: Collected Poems. It contained a number of poems attacking the British legal system. Rasta Time in Palestine (1990). Rasta was featured in The Wailers’ first recording since the death of Bob Marley and also Nelson Mandela. In 1996, Mandela requested that Benjamin host the president’s Two Nations Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Zephaniah’s first book of poetry for children was called Talking Turkeys. He later published his first novel for teenagers in 1999, called, Face. Benjamin is a supporter of Aston Villa F.C. and is the patron for an Aston Villa supporters’ website. He appeared as a panelist on the BBC television show QI, on the episode “Roaming” in 2020.
