Big Moe Cause Of Death
Moe, a Houston rapper and an original member of the Screwed Up Click, died Sunday after a heart attack left him in a coma for a week. Moe, born Kenneth Moore, was a big man with a melodic flow that was less talking than it was singing.
“That’s what set him apart – Moe was a singer,” said Lil’ O, another original SUC member. “But he wasn’t a traditional R&B singer, because he was singing about what was going on in the streets.”
“(Big Moe) was the godfather of sipping drank, or making it what it is on record,” said Crisco Kidd, a DJ on Party 104.9 FM.
His interpretation of the drug was also very distinct. Whereas DJ Screw turned a codeine trip into slow, chopped beats and raps, Moe turned it into celebratory psychedelia. The video for Purple Stuff was a Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory-inspired shoot.
And the chorus on Barre Baby, a single off his first album, City Of Syrup, is sung by children. “Barre baby / the Barre baby,” they repeat over staccato strings, until Moe digs in, “Now I got the whole world sippin’ drank with me.””Moe was like a big kid,” said Crisco Kid. “And with his drank, he was like a kid with a lollipop.”
Moe was born in Houston on 20 August 1974. He grew up in the southeast side of town and, like many in the Screwed Up Click, his rapping career began when he dropped rhymes on DJ Screw mixtapes.
“It’s tragic what happened,” said Crisco Kidd about Moe’s untimely death. “Maybe his death tells us it’s time for everyone to put their cup down.”

Big Moe Just A Dog
Big released his third and last album, Big Life, in 2003. It included his last commercially successful single, Just a Dog, and perhaps more fittingly, it included, Leave Drank Alone, a solemn, vulnerable, straight R&B goodbye to syrup.
Big Moe Career
Being one of the founding members of the “Original Screwed Up Click,” Moe started out in music by freestyling on DJ Screw mixtapes before being signed to Wreckshop Records. Wreckshop Records released his debut album, the City of Syrup in 2000; the title a nod to Houston’s reputation for drinking codeine-laced syrup, which Big pours from a Styrofoam cup on the album’s cover.
“City of Syrup” album featured the single, “Mann!”, which Moe intended to be The South Side’s answer to Black Rob’s East Coast hit “Whoa!”. A year and a half later, Moe returned with his second album, Purple World in 2002. This release showcased a Who’s Who of Houston vocalists and two versions of Big’s breakthrough single, “Purple Stuff.”
The Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory-themed video for “Purple Stuff” were played on MTV and the album ranked as high as No. 3 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. His third and last album, Big Life, was issued in 2003, including the commercially successful single “Just a Dog.”
A posthumous album entitled Unfinished Business was released on 18 March 2008, through Wreckshop Records and Koch Records. In 2009 his album City Of Syrup was named number 25 on houstonpress.com’s list of the 25 Best Houston Hip-Hop Albums.
