Henson was born on 7 October 1955, in Melbourne, Australia. He was brought up in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Henson pursued Visual Arts and Design from 1974–1975 at Prahran College of Advanced Education where Athol Shmith was director of the Photography program and John Cato and Paul Cox were lecturers.
He did not complete the diploma, though the nineteen-year-old Henson’s profession was inspired by Shmith to Jennie Boddington, inaugural Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Victoria with the development that Henson’s first solo show was displayed there in 1975.
He operated at The Bookshop of Margareta Webber 343 Little Collins Street Melbourne from his period as a student until its closure in 1980, which specialized in elegant books on ballet, dance, and the visual arts. Leaving the bookshop, he traveled and photographed in Eastern Europe. He trained briefly at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, where he met Luminist Melbourne painter Louise Hearman in 1981.
