Winston was born on May 6, 1943, in Tuskegee, Alabama, United States. Winston was a boy growing up in Tuskegee at that time and attended the Tuskegee University lab school, called the Chambliss Children’s House, with many of the children of the African American men in training. Also, his father was a medical technologist at the large Veterans Hospital in town.

However, after graduation, Winston enrolled in the US Air Force, where he performed for six years. During this time, Winston performed as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, and in March 1971, he piloted an F-4E Phantom that struck anti-aircraft batteries deep within North Vietnamese territory. The mission succeeded him the Distinguished Flying Cross.
