Kidd was born on 13 April 1943, in Burlington, Vermont, United States. He was brought up in the ski town of Stowe, where his parents, Betty, and Bill, ran the Buccaneer Motel. With motivation and coaching from his father, and with support from the town of Stowe, Kidd became a top junior ski racer at Stowe with the Mount Mansfield Ski Team.
