Al Jazeera America’s first Detroit bureau correspondent will be former WDIV-TV reporter Onile-Ere, Al Jazeera announced today. “Al Jazeera hired me because of my expertise in Detroit,” Onile-Ere, 34, said in a phone interview on Tuesday afternoon. She said she starts Monday in preparation for the launch of the channel on Aug. 20. In addition to working at WDIV, Onile-Ere was an anchor and reporter at the ABC affiliate in Flint, WJRT-TV, after beginning her career in Minnesota, where she grew up. She has won two Emmy Awards and an Associated Press Award. Al Jazeera America will be news, lifestyle and investigative journalism channel that will offer the U.S. audience objective, fact-based and in-depth news focused on issues that are important to everyday Americans. The Detroit Bureau is one of 12 that the news channel will open in cities across the country. “Bisi has lived in Michigan the past 10 years and is committed to covering the news and its impact on the people who live in Detroit and the rest of the Midwest,” said Marcy McGinnis, Al Jazeera America’s senior vice-president, newsgathering. “That is the kind of dedication and experience that Al Jazeera America values and wants its correspondents to bring to its viewers.”

Bisi, previously a general assignment reporter at FOX 9 was promoted up to the anchor’s desk after an internal promotion from the Twin Cities TV station. Onile-Ere, who had been with the station from 2017, had been promoted to be the early evening news anchor, her promotion was announced in a news release by FOX 9. Starting Monday, she will join fellow news anchor Tim Blotz for the half-hour FOX 9 News at 6:30 p.m., and the hour-long FOX 9+ at 7 p.m. “With her hard news background and true commitment to the state of Minnesota, Bisi will be the perfect fit for this role, as she continues breaking stories and connecting with our community, both in the field and on the anchor desk,” said Marian Davey, FOX 9 VP and News Director. Before she became part of the FOX 9, Onile-Ere used to work as a fill-in anchor at Al-Jazeera America in Detroit, and prior to that, she worked as a reporter at WDIV-TV in Detroit. Prior to that, she was employed at WJRT-TV in Flint, Michigan, having started her career in Minnesota with KDLH-TV in Duluth. The new addition to the anchor team comes as FOX 9 says goodbye to another, the long-serving Jeff Passolt, who is retiring from broadcasting after 23 years with the station.
