Jordan signed a new contract with St. Louis in June 1992, receiving a $1.7 million signing bonus to give up football and play baseball exclusively, effectively ending his football career.
Post-baseball
Jordan is an Atlanta Braves TV pregame analyst on Braves Live, the official pregame show on FSN South and SportSouth. He volunteers with the Brian Jordan Foundation in Atlanta and wrote the semi-autobiographical children’s book I Told You I Can Play!
In 2009, he was hired as a television commentator for the Gwinnett Braves, the Atlanta Braves’ AAA farm team. Jordan was assigned to a 25-game television schedule with Josh Caray.
St. Louis Cardinals
Jordan made his Major League Baseball debut on April 8, 1992, with the St. Louis Cardinals. During his first three seasons, he mostly played as a utility outfielder, but in his first full year, 1995, he had 145 hits, 20 doubles, and a.296 batting average in 490 at-bats.
In addition, he had 22 home runs and 81 RBIs. He built on his success in 1996, hitting.310 with 104 RBIs and a.349 on-base percentage while primarily playing right field and cleanup for the Cardinals.
Jordan had a.422 batting average with runners in scoring position (RISP), which was the Cardinals’ all-time high (the RISP statistic had been officially and consistently kept since 1974) until outfielder Allen Craig surpassed it in 2013. He also had the highest batting average with the bases loaded in the Major Leagues.
Jordan hit.333 in the NLDS and hit a game-winning home run in Game 4 of the 1996 NLCS that year. Jordan rebounded from an injury-plagued 1997 season in which he hit.234 with no home runs to score 100 runs, hit 25 home runs, and batted a career-high. 316, and had a.534 slugging percentage in 1998.
Atlanta Braves
His stats in 1998 helped earn Jordan a $21.3 million contract with the Atlanta Braves.
Jordan had a strong April and May to help the Braves start the 1999 season on a high note. This led to his one and only All-Star appearance. He hit 100 runs and drove in 115 runs again this season.
Jordan batted.471 in the 1999 NLDS against the Houston Astros, hit the game-winning double in the 12th inning of Game 3, and drove in seven of Atlanta’s 18 runs. He hit two home runs in the 1999 NLCS but went 0 for 13 in his one World Series appearance.
Jordan’s batting average and RBI totals fell in 2000, but in 2001, Jordan hit 25 home runs with a.295 average and was outstanding in the final games of the season, helping the Braves win their tenth straight division title after a close race with the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets.
Later career
On January 15, 2002, he was involved in a multiplayer trade. In exchange for Gary Sheffield, Atlanta sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with pitcher Odalis Pérez.
Jordan’s playing time in 2003 was reduced due to injuries following a strong season in 2002 in which he hit.285. Jordan signed a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers in 2004 and batted.222 while missing time due to injuries.
In 2005, he returned to the Braves, where he spent the majority of the season on the disabled list due to left knee inflammation, while rookie sensation Jeff Francoeur took over in the right field.
He made the team again in 2006, relying on his veteran savvy rather than athletic ability, but was again limited to a platoon role at first base before going on the disabled list. Jordan hung up his cleats at the end of the 2006 season.
