Wheat’s career started in the early 1980s when he met Frank Hannon and Jeff Keith. The three of them started playing music together and eventually formed the band City Kidd. In 1982, the band changed its name to Tesla and added Tommy Skeoch and Troy Luccketta to the lineup.
Tesla released their debut album, Mechanical Resonance, in 1986. The album was a commercial success, reaching number 18 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawning the hit singles “Love Song” and “Modern Day Cowboy”.
