How Camilla Is Reacting to Prince Charles’s COVID-19 Diagnosis
This morning, news broke that Prince Charles has tested positive for COVID-19. A palace source told Town & Country that the heir to the throne remains in “good spirits” despite experiencing mild symptoms. The source also shared that the Prince’s illness is “unlikely to escalate into a more serious case.”
His wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has tested negative for the novel coronavirus. It is understood that Camilla is concerned for Charles, but remains upbeat. A source notes that the couple is following guidelines to isolate separately for seven days.
Both Charles and Camilla have been at Birkhall, the couple’s home on the grounds of Balmoral, the Queen’s residence in Scotland, since March 22. They were tested by the NHS in Aberdeenshire while at Birkhall after Charles began experiencing mild symptoms. While there is reportedly a shortage of tests in the UK, and the NHS Scotland website notes that “generally, you’ll only be tested for COVID-19 if you have a serious illness that requires admission to hospital,” Clarence House reports that both Charles and Camilla “met the criteria required for testing.”
Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer also issued a statement about the couple’s testing. “Dr. Catherine Calderwood, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, has confirmed that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, were tested for COVID-19 for clinical reasons,” it read. “She is very pleased to confirm that both remain in good health.”
Charles’s last public engagement—and his last encounter with the Queen—was on March 12. Buckingham Palace stated that the monarch is “in good health” and “following all the appropriate advice with regard to her welfare.”
