Her first full-time job out of university was as a newscaster for the W4 News on WWWW FM Radio.

In 1978, she made the transition from radio to television when she landed a role as a reporter for a WDIV-TV news program.

Soon, she became the anchor desk and shared half her tenure with the popular Mort Crim. Additionally, she got a new partner, an Oklahoma City anchor who had been working with a legendary partner, Linda Cavanaugh of KFOR-TV.

Her career success doesn’t end here as Harlan has been selected to carry the Olympic torch twice as it passed through Detroit, both in 1996 and 2002. Moreover, she is the annual co-host of Detroit’s America’s Thanksgiving Parade and International Freedom Festival Fireworks.
