Carol Channing Biography
Carol Channing was an American actress, singer, dancer and comedian. She was born on January 31, 1921 in Seattle, Washington DC. She is known for starring Broadway and other film musicals, her characters typically radiated a passionate expressiveness and an easily recognizable voice, whether singing or for humor.
She has had a successful acting career and won a number of awards among them the Golden Globe Award and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Muzzy in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967).
Carol Channing was featured in other films like The First Traveling Saleslady, Skidoo. On television, she appeared as an entertainer on variety of TV shows, from The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1950s to Hollywood Squares. She had a standout performance as The White Queen in the TV production of Alice in Wonderland (1985), and had the first of many TV specials in 1966, An Evening with Carol Channing.
Channing was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981 and received a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 1995. She continued to perform and make appearances well into her 90s, singing songs from her repertoire and sharing stories with fans, cabaret style. She released an autobiography, titled Just Lucky I Guess, in 2002, and Larger Than Life, a documentary film about her career, was released in 2012.
Carol majored in drama at Bennington College and during an interview in 1994 admitted that she first wanted to perform on stage as a singer when she was in the fourth grade. She also remembered being emotionally drawn to the stage after seeing Ethel Waters perform.
In her fourth grade she ran for and was elected class secretary: “I stood up in class and campaigned by kidding the teachers. The other kids laughed. I loved the feeling—It was a very good feeling; it still is.” She read the class minutes every Friday, often impersonating the children who were discussed.

She has been in 4 different marriages. Carol got married to Theodore Naidish in 1941 and divorced in 1944, 10 years later (1953) she was married to Alexander Carson once again they divorced in 1956. Later in same year after divorcing Carson, Carol got married to Charles Lowe in a marriage that lasted for 43 years after he died in 1999. In her fourth marriage she was married by Harry Kullijian in 2003 and he died in 2011.

She was born to the late Adelaide (née Glaser; 1886–1984) and the late George Christian Channing (1888-1957). Her mother was of German Jewish descent, while her father George who was multiracial (African American and German), changed his surname from Stucker to Channing before she was born. As a city editor at the Seattle Star, he took a job in San Francisco and the family moved when she was two weeks old. He became a Christian Science practitioner, editor and teacher.
