Tallahassee dads foster, adopt three | Pride Month
Casanova and Daniel Nurse remember when they first laid eyes on tiny, 2-day-old Ava Rose. Born seven weeks premature, she fits snug in the hand of 6-foot-3-inch tall Casanova.
His husband Daniel said it was love at first sight.
On a recent afternoon in the family’s Pedrick Pond home, a 5-year-old Ava Rose sat in a frilly dress, stacking magnetic blocks together in the shape of a small rainbow castle. Her brothers Cameron and Neijal, both 8, were nearby in a corner of the siblings’ colorful playroom playing games.
Casanova is a local celebrity, a chief meteorologist at WTXL ABC 27. Daniel works as an accountant for the state. The pair married in 2015 on Valentine’s Day, in the greenery of their backyard, just weeks after the gay marriage ban was lifted in Florida.
But even before that, they were paving the way for other same-sex couples like them who wanted to be parents.

At the hearing when they testified to adopt little Cameron, even the judge asked if it was legal, he recalled. “It was such a new concept and it was at that cusp of the evolution of reality — where we are now.”
Then came Neijal, who the couple adopted on his second birthday too, throwing a Thomas-the-Train-themed party.
He and his brother Cameron, just a few months apart, became inseparable. When the family moved into their current home, the boys asserted they still wanted to share a Spiderman-themed room together.
When Ava Rose came along, the boys loved holding and feeding their newborn sister.
Casanova and Daniel met 14 years ago at a men’s dinner club meeting inside a Monroe Street Italian restaurant. Casanova, charismatic though quiet, was a bit nervous. But a few days later, the two met again for a date — and clicked. Daniel was charmed by Casanova’s gentleness and handsome posture; Casanova by Daniel’s giving heart.
Fathering the three young kids together, as well as a 15-year-old godson Kyron, who spends the summers with them, there’s always a ballet recital, a baseball game or friend’s birthday party. On vacations, the family camps in their RV at Jellystone Park, where they lounge along a lazy river and the kids hop inside bounce houses.
“Seeing there was a need, and seemingly not enough people to meet that need — that was certainly one of the driving factors (for adopting),” Casanova said. “Being able to make a difference in a young child’s life … their future can be brighter.”
The children’s crafts hang along with a bulletin board in the kitchen: Cameron’s colored-pencil astronaut, Neijal’s purple-and-blue canvas painting, and Ava Rose’s pink watercolor handprints.
A photo of her hangs framed by Popsicle sticks. On it reads the prompt: “My dad is my superhero because… They make me happy when I go to sleep and have nightmares.”
The journey to becoming fathers wasn’t free of hurdles. An attorney once refused to work with the couple because he disagreed with their lifestyle and the then-new law, Daniel said. Casanova’s dad refused to meet Daniel when they were dating.
When we started bringing in children, I think a lot of their concerns, a lot of their myths were debunked,” Casanova said. His dad started calling Daniel “Dan.” He drove up from Tampa for Cameron’s adoption party.
“It gave me relief,” Casanova said, especially since three months later, his dad died. “It gave me reaffirmation that even people who may still to this day have a belief that the way we live our life is wrong … once you get that personal experience, you see that someone being gay is not a weird thing.”
