Cassidy became popular for his freestyles and began performing as a battle rapper in the late 1990s. During the early  2000s,  he decided to switch from battle rap to mainstream hip hop. Subsequently,  in 2002 he signed a major deal with Ruff Ryders and Full Surface  Records under the aegis of J Records. His first studio album, Split Personality, released in March 2004  thus peaking at the second spot on the US Billboard 200 chart. Later on, he signed a record deal with American music label Swizz Beatz’s Full Surface imprint, In 2002, under the auspices of Ruff Ryders Entertainment and J Records. Here, Cass released his commercial debut single, “Hotel,” featuring R Kelly, on November 29, 2003. As a result, the single had reached the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The second single, “Get Not Good,” features Mashonda. On March 16, 2004, Cassidy released his first album, Split Personality. It was certified platinum by the American Record industry Association (RIAA) in the first month of the year.

On 15 April 2005, three men, including Cassidy, armed with caliber .45,.40  and 9 mm pistols and an AK 47 assault rifle,    fired at three unarmed men in the West Oak  Lane neighborhood of  Northwest  Philadelphia. Desmond  Hawkins was murdered with a shot in the back. Hawkins  ‘ two other associates were hospitalized with bullet wounds and later on discharged. On 9 June, an order was issued for Cassidy’s arrest on murder charges and possession of weapons. On the afternoon of June 17, Cassidy agreed to surrender to the Philadelphia police. The murder case of Cassidy took a turn when the main witness retracted his confession. As a result, the judge decided that Cassidy was going to stand trial for third-degree murder. On 25 Jan 2006, Cassidy was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, two charges of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a criminal weapon for his role in the attack. He was sentenced to 11 to 23 months in prison with parole and 7 months in prison. he was released from the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Pennsylvania on March 2, 2006, after serving for eight months. The rapper is talking about his arrest and jail time in the 2011 film Rhyme and Punishment.
