Charley Pride is an American country music singer, guitarist, recording artist, performer, and business owner. He is best known for being the best-selling performer on RCA Records.

Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi in a family of eight boys and three girls. While growing up, he was primarily exposed to Blues, Gospel and Country music. Charley’s father unexpectedly nurtured Charley’s love of Country music by tuning the family’s Philco radio to Nashville’s WSM-AM while trying to catch Grand Ole Opry broadcasts.

Citing this, Pride purchased his first guitar at the age of 14, a Silvertone from a Sears Roebuck catalog and taught himself how to play it by listening to the songs that he heard on the radio.
