Education
Chen started attending school at the Elementary School for the Blind in Linyi City in 1989 at the age of 18, as a grade one student. He enrolled for the Blind at Qingdao High School in 1994 where he studied until 1998. He had already started to cultivate an interest in law and sometimes would ask his brothers to teach him legal texts.
He won a spot at the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1998 but they had to borrow $340 to cover tuition costs because his family was poor. They still fell short of the necessary $400 and they reportedly had to plead with the university authorities before allowing Chen to enroll. He studied acupuncture and massage in Nanjing from 1998 to 2001. Chen also audited legal courses, gaining an adequate understanding of the law to allow him to assist his fellow villagers when they requested his help. After graduating, he returned to his home region and found a job as a masseur at Yinan County Hospital.

Chen Guangcheng Arrest
Chen received international attention in 2005 for organizing a landmark class-action case against authorities in Linyi, province of Shandong, for unfair implementation of one-child policies. As a result of this case, Chen was put under house arrest in June 2006, with formal detention from September 2005 to March 2006. On 24 August 2006, Chen was sentenced to four years and three months for “damaging property and organizing a mob to disrupt traffic.”
Chen Guangcheng Release and House arrest
After completing his full sentence, he was released from prison in 2010 but remained under house arrest or “simple detention” at his home in Dongshigu Village. Chen and his wife have allegedly been assaulted shortly after a video of their home released in February 2011 under heavy police surveillance by a human rights organization.
Chen ‘s case gained continued international coverage, with the United States. Appeals for his release were released by the State Department, the British Foreign Secretary, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International; the latter party declared him a prisoner of conscience.
