Moreno is the co-founder, lead vocalist and contributing guitarist of Deftones, an American alternative metal band. He co-founded the band with his high school friends, Abe Cunningham and Stephen Carpenter in 1988.
The group became strong and within two years, they began performing at club shows. They were later noted by one of their representatives while playing and were signed to Maverick Records in Los Angeles.
