He began his sportscasting career at Hartford’s WVIT-TV as a weekend sports anchor. He joined ESPN a month after it’s founding in 1979 and so far he has been one of ESPN’s longest-tenured employees. He spent 31 years as the host of both Sunday NFL Countdown and 10 years hosting Monday Night Countdown. Often, he appears on Sportscenter at night (midnight to 1 a.m.) as he hosts brief segments called “Berman’s two-minute drill”.
He hosted ESPN’s first game show from 1988 to 1989, Boardwalk and Baseball’s Super Bowl of Sports Trivia and by 1993, he was described as the leader of the ESPN team and one of the most recognizable sportscasters in the business. He served as the on-field emcee for Thurman Thomas’s number retirement ceremony on October 29, 2018.
