Abuse Allegations
His ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra published an essay on Medium on June 14, 2018, in which she alleged that she had been subjected to emotional and sexual abuse by an unnamed ex-boyfriend, and claimed that she was subject to career blacklisting in retaliation for ending the relationship. The essay did not name the abuser, but the timing and several Key details led readers to conclude it was Chris. In response, Nerdist removed all mentions of Chris from its website while ACM announced that further episodes of Talking With Chris Hardwick would be pulled. He also stepped away from moderating all ACM and BBC America panels at San Diego Comic-Con.
However, he denied Dykstra’s allegations and said, “Our three-year relationship was not perfect-we were ultimately not a good match and argued-even shouted at each other but I love her and did my best to uplift and support her as a partner and companion in any way and at on time did I sexually assault her.”
Days after Chris’s dismissal from AMC, an unverified text message from 2014 and 2915 were released by TMZ in which Hardwick sent a lengthy breakup message to Dykstra as she pleaded with him to reconsider. The messages revealed that Dykstra had also been involved in another romantic relationship with an unidentified man named Sam despite her pleas to reconcile with Chris, and included Dykstra admitting that she had handled the situation poorly.
AMC suspended him from its shows while conducting an investigation. AMC concluded its investigation and allowed him to resume his position in August 2018. Chloe refused to participate in the investigation.
