Christopher Buckley Career
Buckley is the son of Firing Line host and writer William F. Buckley Jr. and socialite Patricia Buckley. Buckley graduated from Yale University in 1975 after receiving a classical education at the Portsmouth Abbey School.
He, like his father, was a Skull and Bones member who attended Jonathan Edwards College. He relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1981 to work as the chief speechwriter for Vice President George H. W. Bush.
This experience inspired his novel The White House Mess, which is a satire of White House office politics and political memoirs. Buckley’s nonfiction novel Steaming to Bamboola is about the merchant marine. He also contributed to an oral history of Milford, Connecticut, served as managing editor of Esquire and worked as an editor at Forbes magazine.
National Review
Christopher Buckley wrote a back-page column for National Review, the conservative magazine founded by his father, for a brief period in the summer and fall of 2008.
He stopped writing this column after endorsing Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee for 2008, in October 2008. The Daily Beast published Buckley’s endorsement, titled “Sorry Dad, I’m Voting for Obama.”
Buckley resigned from National Review after many readers and contributors expressed their displeasure. Buckley apologized for the title of his article endorsing Obama (which many of his father’s friends and supporters found offensive, especially since it appeared shortly after his father’s death), but he continued to write for The Daily Beast on occasion.
