Career

Minnesota Twins

Drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1989, Knoblauch earned the American League Rookie of the Year award and a World Series ring in 1991. Notably, he attempted a deceptive play in Game 7 of the World Series. His performance during the 1994–96 seasons included batting averages of .312, .333, and .341, respectively, winning the AL Gold Glove Award in 1997 and stealing over 40 bases for three consecutive years.

In 1998, the Twins traded Knoblauch to the New York Yankees for Eric Milton, Cristian Guzmán, Brian Buchanan, Danny Mota, and $3 million. Despite his past popularity in Minnesota, his request to be traded resulted in being booed on subsequent visits to the Metrodome, with fans expressing their displeasure through various objects in 2001.

New York Yankees

Knoblauch’s arrival in New York sparked excitement, with high expectations for a formidable double-play duo alongside Derek Jeter. Despite early struggles, he contributed to the Yankees’ record-breaking 114-win season. However, in the 1998 ALCS, an infamous defensive play led to criticism as he argued instead of retrieving a loose ball, allowing the Indians to score.

Despite this setback, Knoblauch played a crucial role in the Yankees’ World Series victories in 1998 and 1999. His standout moments include a dramatic two-run home run in Game 3 of the 1999 World Series and scoring the winning run in Game 5 of the 2001 World Series. Throughout his time with the Yankees, the team consistently clinched the American League pennant, securing three World Series championships.

Kansas City Royals

Towards the end of his career, Knoblauch’s performance at the plate declined, possibly influenced by fielding troubles and a focus on hitting home runs. This struggle was evident in the final game of the 2001 World Series, where he was benched after hitting just .056.

He subsequently joined the Kansas City Royals but played only 80 games in left field, batting .210. The team chose not to renew his contract the following year. In 2003, unable to secure a spot with an MLB team, Knoblauch officially announced his retirement.
