While still at Valparaiso University, Thompson spent a summer holiday as an intern in the KCRG-TV9 Weather Lab. Here he worked with Chief Meteorologist Joe Winters and the rest of the First Alert Storm Team to begin to sharpen his skills as a television meteorologist.
After he graduated from college, Thompson went back to KCRG-TV9. He worked for several years behind the curtains helping conduct research and create weather graphics for use on-air.
In October 2018, Thompson joined the KCRG-TV9 First Alert Storm Team as the weekend morning meteorologist. Thompson has been interested in weather since he was young.
His main interests in weather are severe thunderstorms and interesting historical climate data. Thompson enjoys storm chasing and he is mostly virtually tracking storms locally or nationally during the Spring and Summer months.
Thompson gets to experience a variety of different weather conditions since he is living in Iowa. His favorite season is Spring, but he loves the variability and forecasting challenges that all of Iowa’s seasons bring.
Iowa exposes him to all types of weather it experiences throughout the year. While in college at Valpo, Thompson participated in two 11-day storm chase trips on the Great Plains, taking him and a team of 20 peers wherever the wind led them.
Aside from the realm of meteorology, Thompson is a big sports fan. He loves college football and basketball, supports and cheers on the Iowa Hawkeyes, mostly due to growing up in Iowa City. He also plays golf, ultimate frisbee, and occasionally swing a tennis racket.
