Cornell Belcher Career
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Belcher became interested in politics at a young age when he visited Washington, D.C. on a field trip. He moved to Washington, D.C. after graduating from James Madison University. In the 1998 election cycle, he served as Women VOTE! coordinator for Emily’s List. He was also the Special Projects Director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the 2000 campaign cycle, and as Senior Political Advisor to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) in the 2002 cycle.

Cornell Belcher Brilliant Corners Research & Strategies
In 2001, Belcher founded Brilliant Corners Research & Strategies (stylized brilliant corners Research & Strategies), a polling firm that played a major role in electing Barack Obama as President of the United States in both 2008 and 2012.Belcher is one of the few black pollsters in Washington, a distinction that has helped shape him and his views of the future of the Democratic Party. He stresses the importance of diversity within the party, as both a vehicle for change and a means to success.
So when Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) announced his intentions to run for president, Belcher, 37, seized the opportunity to join his campaign. He shares polling duties with Paul Harstad, who conducted Obama’s polling when he ran for the Senate in 2004.
Belcher also does polling for the Democratic National Committee. A spokesman there said that his situation did not represent a conflict. The nature of the polling differs between a presidential primary and the DNC in that a primary candidate focuses on a small group of primary voters and caucus participants, while the committee monitors a much larger spectrum for the general election.
None of the other Democratic presidential hopefuls returned calls for comment.
“There have been lots of the consultants for the DNC who have done primary races and continued to work for the DNC,” Belcher said. “I don’t think I should be any different.”
Stan Greenberg, CEO of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, did work for the DNC in 2000 and served as pollster for the party’s presidential nominee, Al Gore; in 2004, Geoff Garin of Peter D. Hart Research Associates worked for Gen. Wesley Clark in the primary and the DNC in the general election.
Belcher, a native of Norfolk, Va., came to Washington after he graduated from James Madison University. He had an internship at Greenberg before he got a job with the Feldman Group Inc. There, he worked with Diane Feldman on polling for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.) and on former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry’s reelection campaign.
“Cornell has a lot of ideas,” Feldman said. “The Democratic Party itself is in a really exciting period of looking at message in different ways and connecting more directly with individual voters and their thinking and their values, and Cornell is very much a part of that.”
Ron Lester, who employed Belcher from 1995 to 1998, said, “He is the kind of person who watches C-SPAN sometimes for the whole weekend.”
Belcher left Lester to work for EMILY’s List. As one of the few men on the political team, he coordinated races across the country during the 1998 cycle. He then joined the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for the 2000 cycle. When he left to branch out on his own in 2001, he felt somewhat cynical about the organization.
“Committees were not about change, but more about protecting the status quo and changing around the margins,” he explained.
Belcher decided he would never work for a committee again. Or so he though
