This captured the attention of coaches who acknowledged his potential and urged him to pursue cricket seriously. He quickly drew the attention of coaches and progressed to the St John’s cricket team. He was selected in the Leeward Islands match, he took seven for 67, that is seven wickets for 67 runs for Antigua against St Kitts.
He made his first-class debut for the Leeward Islands in 1985–86 and took four wickets in the game, but failed to retain his place the following year. A Viv Richards scholarship provided funding for him to play club cricket in England for Chester Boughton Hall Cricket Club in the highly-rated Liverpool Competition in 1986 where he took 84 wickets at an average of 9.80. In 1987, he returned to England to play for Heywood Cricket Club in the Central Lancashire League, where he took 115 wickets in the season; these experiences assisted him in enhancing his bowling technique.
