Paradise Lost documentary series

HBO commissioned Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky to film the trial and produce a documentary because of the significant national interest in the case and the age of the putative murderers. 

The judge granted full access to the sessions, the victims’ relatives, and the accused in an unusual step. 

The ensuing three-film series became Bruce Sinofsky’s most well-known work, earning him an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award in 1996, as well as an Oscar nomination for Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory in 2011. 

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills was the first film to be released in 1996. It was the start of a global movement to rescue the three young men known as “The West Memphis Three.”

Celebrity support and collaborations

A number of Hollywood celebrities, including Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and actor Johnny Depp, have actively advocated for the release of The Memphis Three. 

In the front row of the courtroom, Vedder sat close to Echols’ wife Lorri and embraced him once he was released. 

The song “Army Reserve” from the album “Pearl Jam” (2006) was co-written by Echols. 

Michale Graves, a former Misfits vocalist, also backed the cause, recording the Illusions album in October 2007, which featured written content and accompanying vocals from Echols.

The Devil’s Knot book and film

Echols’s character is central for the Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, a 2002 true-crime story by Mara Leveritt. In 2013, Atom Egoyan directed Devil’s Knot, a film adaptation of the book with Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth. Echol’s character was played by an upcoming actor James Hamrick.

The Midnight Gospel appearance

In April 2020, Echols appeared as Darryl the Fish in The Midnight Gospel animated TV series aired on Netflix. His character walked the main character, Clancy, through the philosophy of magic.
